Instructional Design Workflow & Adult Learning Principles

Explore the design factors and adult learning principles that go into my Instructional Design workflow.

Instructional Design Workflow

Below is an outline of my workflow process for creating e-learning material.
6 Steps toward an Engaging Presentation

The following eLearning Package I created for the Instructional Coaching Institute professional development day. This was a live session for teaching campus instructional coaches the basics of how to design an engaging staff presentation.

Step 1: Analysis

Our Instructional Coaching Institute team conducted a needs analysis with nearly 200 district instructional coaches to determine what type of learning was desired and needed. The returning information determined a need for approximately 7 categories related to instructional coaching practices. One of the categories was increasing staff engagement during professional learning community (plc) and faculty meetings.

This was the category I chose to address. Click here to learn the details of this analysis.

Step 2: Design

Having determined the root cause of the issue, I began designing the learning experience. Click here to learn the details of this design process.

Step 3: Development

The development of an interactive learning experience was both rewarding and fun. Click here to see the tools and workflow process I used to create this product.

Step 4: Implementation

I conducted this training session via Zoom as one of seven choices for attendees to the training, with approximately 90 instructional coaches attending. Although the training package is meant to be used in a self-paced manner, I altered the presentation style to accommodate the live training nature of that day's session choices. Afterward, the learning package became available via Canvas for self-paced professional development. The video below is the final learning package after changes from the participants' feedback.

Step 5: Evaluation

I provided a short survey to the participants after the live training session regarding the learning package. I asked questions to determine its clarity, usefulness, and effectiveness toward achieving the goal. I made changes to some of the animations as well as clarifying some concepts in the learning package.

ID Models & Adult Learning Principles

Instructional Design Models

I am fluent in the following instructional design models:

  • ADDIE (this is what I use primarily)

  • Dick & Carey

  • Gagne's 9 events

  • Bloom's Taxonomy (revised)

Adult Learning Theory

I am fluent in the following adult learning theories:

  • The 5 Assumptions of Andragogy - Knowles

  • Transformative Learning

  • Experiential Learning

  • Self-directed Learning

  • Project-based Learning (PBL)

This is a literature review I wrote examining the advantages of Project Based Learning using technology integration for self-directed learning.

This is my thesis paper examining the development and implementation of an online training package using instructional technology.
